NZ Law Review

We publish The New Zealand Law Review quarterly. It has been in publication, in various forms, since our inception in 1966, and is widely regarded as New Zealand's leading law review. It includes refereed articles by leading New Zealand and international scholars, together with regular reviews of the major areas of law, written by specialist contributing editors.

To purchase previous individual articles or issues of the NZ Law Review in PDF format, or to order a hard copy, see Published Issues below.

If you would like to view any issues prior to 2022, please email Julia Clancy at info@legalresearch.org.nz.

Important Update on New Zealand Law Review

Thank you for your commitment and support of the Legal Research Foundation and the New Zealand Law Review.

We would like to update you on some important changes relating to the New Zealand Law Review. Following many years of self-publishing the Review, the Legal Research Foundation has decided that the time is right to transition to a new approach to secure the future of the Review and we are pleased to be partnering with Thomson Reuters in this endeavour.

The Review will still be edited by members of the University of Auckland Law Faculty, but from 2026 it is being produced by Thomson Reuters and available in hard copy and online through Thomson Reuters’ Westlaw New Zealand platform.

This change reflects the commercial realities for a small organisation of producing a peer-reviewed journal. But it is also an opportunity to bring the legal research of the New Zealand academy, judiciary and profession to a wider audience. This is an important part of the LRF’s mission.

We thank the many people that have contributed to and helped produce the Review since its first issue in 1966. You can read more about this in 2026 issue 1 of the Review, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Legal Research Foundation.

As with all transitions, we expect a small period of disruption while new processes and systems are established. Work is well underway on 2026 Issues 1 and 2 of the Review and we anticipate they will be published shortly. Work to establish the Review on Westlaw New Zealand has also begun and we anticipate the new database to be available in late June 2026.

Thomson Reuters will shortly be in touch with previous subscribers to provide details on subscription options. In addition, you are welcome to register your interest in subscribing:
· Print (New Zealand subscribers or Interntational subscribers); or
· Online (Westlaw NZ).

Should have any questions, please feel free to contact Matthew Heaphy, Head of New Zealand Legal Market at Thomson Reuters at matthew.heaphy@tr.com.

Again, we thank you for your continued support as we look to the future of the Review.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Jane Norton and Professor Michael Littlewood

Submissions

The review welcomes the submission of articles. The Editors of the New Zealand Law Review are Professor Michael Littlewood and Associate Professor Jane Norton, from the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Law.

The Editors are experts in the relevant field and assess submissions. Their usual practice is to obtain two such reviews and peer review is on an anonymous basis. Please note that the Editors’ decision on which submission is accepted, is final.

The Editors will not consider articles that have been published elsewhere or are concurrently under consideration for publication elsewhere. As the Author, we ask that you please confirm this is not the case when making your submission(s).

Please submit articles by email to the editors, as an email attachment in Word format. Your article(s) needs to:

- Include an abstract of approximately 150 words, and a short statement of your/the Author’s current affiliations and any other relevant personal details.
- Comply with the New Zealand Law Style Guide (Third Edition), available online via link on this page above
- Be 8,000 to 13,000 words in length (including all footnotes).

If your article is accepted for publication, you will receive a copy of the relevant journal part and a PDF offprint (which is not to be posted online). You will also agree to:

- Assign to the publisher their rights to payments distributed by reproduction rights organisations in relation to the Review.
- Agree to licence the publisher to publish articles appearing in the Review through online databases operated by third parties such as Lexis.com and HeinOnline.
- Agree to offer articles for sale online (as well as in print) individually or as an online subscription.

Email your submission(s) to: Michael Littlewood at m.littlewood@auckland.ac.nz or Jane Norton at jane.norton@auckland.ac.nz.
